I know it’s been awhile since my last post. 1 year has passed and I’d visit and explore more places this year. One of them was Surabaya City. It’s located in East Java. Been visiting this city around 3 times already and I made some amateur list for food you need to visit based on my own palate experiences. AND YES, it’s only local foods ‘cause Surabaya is filled with so many good local cuisines. Too bad every time I came here, I only visited for such a short time. So I hope you’ll enjoy and find this useful and here’s my list :

First, we have this viral sunny side up of Warung Pak Eko. They said this place is open for 24 hours and I think this is a perfect place to enjoy a dinner or supper. The portion itself wasn’t really generous compared to their price ( ‘casue it’s a bit pricey ) for a local food itself.
What to order here is their Krengsengan, it’s a diced sliced meat that cooked and marinated with soy sauce and other condiments ‘til they got their distinct brownish color. It’s supposed to have a sweet but savory taste. You also can add another side dishes and toppings in here. BUT don’t forget their perfectly round shaped sunny side up ( and it tasted good too ) for an adding.

Another local food that’s perfect for a dinner and supper is none other than Nasi Ayam Pak De Saijo. It’s also a krengsengan style cooking but they use chicken as the proteins. They only have a several menu since they’re mainly focused on their Krengsengan chicken. You can have it with rice, fried rice or even fried noodle. The chicken portion was generous and you don’t need to worry about the price also in here. Just eat and enjoy your food !

Another top local food you need to try while you were in Surabaya is this Depot Jepun Bali. I know I know, this is a Balinese traditional food restaurant but I really recommend you guys to try their Bigul / Babi guling ( Suckling Pig ) here. They only opened until 3 PM, and usually they are already sold out around 1-2 PM. So you better come early before it’s too late.
What they have here ? Basically people come for their Bigul Rice set and you should too. Oh yeah, they also have Pork Satay on their menu and it’s quite good tho. Their Bigul is much more tasteful than some bigul I’ve tried in Bali. This place is quite famous and can be enjoyed by youngster to old people. It’s pork anyway, what could goes wrong ? LOL.

Not far from Depot Jepun Bali, our next stop is Pasar Atom. Pasar Atom or Pasar Atum is called “the Chinatown of Surabaya” by locals and here lies so many good and delicious street food. There are 2 places that I always visit if I come to Pasar Atom.

First, I was quite confused by their name ‘cause usually what we called Bakwan is some kind of fried corn / shrimp flour pancakes, but here bakwan means meatballs. Their Bakwan here are so tasty, and they have many variants of menu from boiled to fried. ( TIPS : you guys should try their fried intestines, sound gross but tasted really good ). Plus, their broth soup was so rich and savory, it’s divine. You’ll never get bored with this kind of comfort food !

Okay, just around 4-5 stalls near Bakwan Kapasari, you could notice one stall that swarmed by many people. It’s none other than Cakue Peneleh. Basically Cakue is same with what Chinese people said youtiao, it’s a deep fried long gold brownish dough. But for some varieties, they’ll use a shrimp for a filling and it would tasted saltier but richer in flavors.
What To Eat : Obviously their Shrimp Cakue ! But you could also their original Cakue and their pillow cake were also a good choice.

Another popular food to eat while you are hungry at midnight, Why ? They start to open their stall at 10.30 PM, so if you come too early then you won’t find this stall. This stall is located on the sideway of Kranggan street. How to find it ? Simply, just look for a stall that has that ambulance’s siren hanging around.
This stall served you with so many choices of side dish, from protein such as chicken, beef, squid, also intestines, you could also find some side dish such as tempe, tahu or vegetables. What makes this place famous is their peanut gravy. It was so good but also addicting. I can’t eat spicy food but just because it’s too addicting and really good, I came back to this place several times.
